MIX PREP INSTRUCTIONS

In an effort to make your session run as smoothly and cost-effectively as possible, please carefully follow the guidelines below to ensure your mixes are completed on time with minimal issues.

SENDING A PRO TOOLS SESSION

  1. Send ProTools mix files at least 48 hours before the mixing session date (earlier is preferable).
  2. Provide mix notes — even if you think they’re minor.
  3. Print any special effects (like Auto-Tune) before sending.
Do NOT print EQ, compression, reverb, or delay unless you want them committed.
  4. Delete all volume, pan, and mute automation (unless you want them committed).
  5. Delete all sends and busses unless absolutely necessary.
  6. Delete all alternate playlists and unused audio.
Only send files needed for the song to minimize file size and speed up transfer.
  7. Properly label all tracks with clear names (e.g., Kick, Snare 1, Bass, Synth 1, Lead Vocal, Harm 1).
  8. Commit all vocal tuning and ensure it's correct and approved.
  9. Clear out unnecessary tracks.
If it’s muted or not being used, delete it before sending.
  10. Include an MP3 or WAV of your current rough mix from the session you're sending. Make sure it lines up exactly with the session
(Doesn’t have to be final—just something to work from)
  11. Save Session Copy In:
    • Use "Save Session Copy In" and select:
      • “Audio Files”
      • “Main Playlist Only”
    • Double-check the session to ensure everything plays correctly, then zip and send it.

IF YOU ARE SENDING STEMS:

  1. Bypass master bus processing when printing stems, unless it’s CRUCIAL for the sound.
  2. Only send audio files that need mixing.
No alternate takes or unused tracks.
  3. If offering a choice between an effected or dry version, separate them into clear folders with instructions.
  4. Label all audio files properly (e.g., Kick, Snare 1, Bass, Lead Vocal, Harm 1).
  5. Send tuned vocals.
(I do not further tune vocals beyond what Auto-Tune provides.)
  6. Send dry vocals for lead vocals (no printed reverb/delay).
    • If you love a reverb/delay, note the plugin and settings you used.
  7. Preserve your creative production decisions (e.g., filter sweeps, sidechaining, FX throws, creative EQ).
  8. Remove unnecessary plugins (or freeze them if staying inside Pro Tools).
  9. Playlist references:
    • If your song fits in a playlist, tell me what song would play before and after it.
    • Send two reference tracks plus the most recent demo/reference mix you and your team approved.
